About Me

I am chronologically a seasoned citizen, but my mental age is MUCH younger. I own ELF #120 (named Willie) and I am constantly tinkering with him and making modifications. I am currently unemployed, but actively looking for work.

I have recently replaced several failed component, and Willie the Bionic ELFis now running GREAT! The first problem I had was a broken right kingpin, which actually caused the right front wheel to fall off. Fortunately, it made quite a racket when it broke (due to metal fatigue), so I was not actually in the ELF when the wheel separated. To rectify this, I ordered and installed the Dynamic Suspension Upgrade Kit (which includes new STEEL vs aluminum kingpins). Besides solving the original problem, the ride is now smoother and quieter than before, although the installation instructions provided by OT were a bit confusing and not totally accurate.

The 100W solar panel also experienced a total failure, so I was dependent on the plug-in charger for a few months. OT did eventually send me a replacement, and I used stainless machine screws and cap nuts to secure it instead of the rivets supplied by OT. The new panel is doing a fine job keeping my 15 aH battery charged.

Finally, the electronic controller failed, so I had zero electric motor output. I shipped the entire rear bulkhead assembly back to OT, where a new controller was installed by Josh Thomas. It was personally delivered to me by Tom Glass (OT's Director of Manufacturing) who happened to be visiting Birmingham a few weeks ago. He also took the old solar panel back to OT so they could do an autopsy. Everything is now installed and Willie is working better than ever!

Good news...I am now gainfully employed! Bad news...I only get to ride my ELF when I am not working...
